Primary School
The primary school welcomes children aged 6 to 11. It is divided into two cycles: Cycle 2 (CP, CE1, CE2) and Cycle 3 (CM1 and CM2).
Mastery of the French language, as well as Spanish and the first elements of mathematics, are the primary objectives of primary school, enabling students to access the fundamental tools of knowledge.
From the first grade, students begin learning a foreign language, which at the French Lycée of Medellín is English.
In Cycle 2, the program includes lessons aimed at understanding the world, artistic activities (such as visual arts and music education), physical and sports education, as well as moral and civic education.
In Cycle 3, students consolidate their learning in the previous areas and explore science and technology, history and geography, and art history.
The school values the plurality and diversity of each student’s abilities. In addition to reasoning and intellectual reflection, skills such as observation, a taste for experimentation, sensitivity, motor skills, and creative imagination are developed.
Primary School Learning is Organized into Two Cycles
Cycle 2
During the first three years (CP, CE1, CE2), Cycle 2 takes place, which is the cycle of fundamental learning. Students acquire the necessary knowledge that allows them to question the world. It also includes artistic education (music and visual arts), physical and sports education, as well as moral and civic education.
Cycle 3
Cycle 3 takes place during the last two years of primary school and the first year of collège. It is the cycle for consolidating learning from the previous cycle. In addition, students explore science and technology, history and geography, and art history.
French National Assessments
National assessments (at the start of CP, mid-CP, at the start of CE1, and at the start of 6th grade) are essential tools for student success. They not only help identify students’ strengths and areas for improvement but also provide teachers with resources to monitor progress more accurately. Thanks to these tools, it is possible to adapt teaching strategies and ensure more effective support throughout their schooling.
