AEFE Network

Be part of our fraternity: A unique school network in the world

The Lycée Français of Medellín is part of AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad), in charge of directing and managing the French teaching network abroad with the dual mission of guaranteeing educational service for French children outside their country and contributing to the expansion of the French language and culture abroad.

This school network has 540 centers and more than 365,000 students in 138 countries, starting from preschool to the last year of high school. The quality and standardization of the education given, as well as the values promoted, are characteristic features of a network that is unique in the world due to its extension.

  • Standardizing our methodology with the AEFE certifies the compliance of our school with the French educational system and its programs and ensures access to the double baccalaureate degree.
  • This alliance guarantees that students continue their education, regardless of the country in which they are located. This principle of pedagogical continuity allows students of French high schools in the world to enjoy an excellent education that can begin in one country and continue in another, regardless of where their family moves. This network allows foreign students to make French and Francophone culture their own while remaining connected to that of their country.
  • Esta alianza garantiza la continuidad de la enseñanza, independientemente del país en el que un alumno se encuentre. Este principio de continuidad pedagógica permite que los alumnos de los liceos franceses del mundo disfruten de una escolaridad de excelencia que puede comenzar en un país y continuar en otro, según los desplazamientos familiares. Each educational moment of children is based on different cycles, where, through objectives, they can develop their capacities, learn at their own pace, and discover who they are and how far they want to go. Each of these cycles are found in our schools, get to know them here.

In French education it is a requirement that students start school when they turn 3 years old, as we consider it important that children grow up in a structured school environment. These first lessons are the ones that will allow them to later start primary school with greater confidence.

This is the reason why preschool education has already become necessary for young French students. By choosing to enroll your child in a French school in the preschool cycle, you give them the possibility to build the foundations of an excellent development in a caring environment, perfectly adapted to their age. Also, to help them start a solid multilingual education with autonomy. Therefore, we consider it essential for students to enter preschool in the year in which they turn 3 years old.

Maternelle

The main objective of the maternal school is to acquire a rich, organized, and clear oral language. During this period, students will have a direct approach to the French language and will develop their skills and education in two languages (Spanish and French).

During the maternal school grades our students establish relationships with other children and with adults. There they exercise their motor, sensory, affective, relationship and intellectual capacities while progressively becoming students. They will also discover the universe of writing.

The Cycle of the first lessons consists of the three grades of preschool called respectively “Petite Section” (PS), “Moyenne Section” (MS) and “Grande Section” (GS): equivalent to pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and transition in the Colombian educational system.

Primary school

During primary school our students learn to act independently and responsibly in their education. They acquire fundamental tools for knowledge: verbal and written expression, reading, mathematics and problem solving.

It’s the moment when intelligence, artistic sensitivity, crafts, and physical and sports capacities awaken. They also learn important elements to understand their time and place in society, with the study of historical, geographical, scientific, and technical culture. It is during this stage where French knowledge and learning a third language, English, is established.

Cycle 2:

Cycle of fundamental learning, which corresponds to the first three grades of primary school, called respectively “Cours Préparatoire” (CP), “Cours Élémentaire première année” (CE1) and “Cours Élémentaire deuxième année” (CE2) equivalent to first, second and third grade of basic primary school in the Colombian educational system.

Cycle 3 :

Consolidation cycle that corresponds to the following last two grades of primary school, called respectively “Cours Moyen première année” (CM1), “Cours Moyen deuxième année” (CM2) and the Sixième grade (6ème), equivalent to fourth and fifth grade of basic primary school and sixth grade of basic secondary school in the Colombian educational system.

Collègue:

Education during secondary school focuses on several subjects, that play an important role in acquiring and strengthening the knowledge and skills of Colombian education and the French system. In this stage our students develop their capacity and personality, to begin the discovery of new dimensions of themselves.

Secondary school is the moment where the individual and future citizen is formed. For this reason, we emphasize the importance of education, responsibility, respect for others, rules and the environment.

Cycle 4:

Corresponds to the last three grades of basic secondary education, respectively called 5ème, 4ème and 3ème, equivalent to seventh, eighth and ninth grade of basic secondary education in the Colombian educational system.

Lyçée

High school is the last stage that our students live in the Lycée, during which they will be able to exercise their freedom even more in their education, including in the academic activities of their choice, allowing them to emphasize their preferences, abilities, and interests. It is the moment in which students prepare for the next step in their education, putting into practice everything they have learned in each school, and apply it to make intelligent, informed, and mature decisions that will guide them during the following stages of their life and their entry into adulthood.

Determination cycle:

It corresponds to the first year of high school, Called seconde (2nde) equivalent to tenth grade of secondary school in the Colombian educational system.

Terminal cycle:

Corresponds to the last two years of high school, called respectively Première et Terminale, equivalent to eleventh and twelfth grade of secondary school. (Students emphasize on preferred subjects).
